Gujarat University to set up 5-star hotel, hotel management institute, and medical college

Ahmedabad: Gujarat University has unveiled plans to set up a new medical college along with a 300-bed hospital, as decided in a joint meeting of its board of management and executive council held on Tuesday. The proposed facility will include an outpatient department and a helipad for future air ambulance services.
The medical school is expected to be developed at the GMDC ground or another suitable site in the city’s western region. The project aims to improve healthcare access and offer advanced medical education on the lines of municipal models like NHL Medical College.
Interestingly, the sole medical faculty member of the university board was absent during the key meeting. Vice-Chancellor Nirja Gupta stated that a land survey will be conducted across various university-owned plots, and final decisions will follow expert consultation. Around 25–35% of the GMDC ground may be allotted for the project, with funds already earmarked for the development.
In addition to the medical initiative, GU also plans to establish a five-star hotel and a hotel management institute near the Blind People’s Association. Proposals for both projects were placed before the council, with primary approvals already given, and official sanctions are expected soon.
The meeting also addressed the Ahmedabad Education Society’s long-standing request for a university-owned plot near the hostel. Despite discussions and AES’s offer to construct a hostel in exchange, legal issues related to the transfer of donated land have stalled progress. A meeting between the legal teams of both sides will be scheduled to find a resolution. Moreover, the university has decided to name its upcoming Research Park 2 after noted educationist Vidyagauri Nilkanth. DeshGujarat
