Gujarat police leverages fingerprint records in NAFIS to solve 80 crimes in 9 months

Gandhinagar: Gujarat Police has taken a significant step towards smart and professional policing by using modern technology. Through the National Automated Fingerprint Identification System (NAFIS), the state police have solved around 80 major crimes up to September this year, marking another milestone in its tech-driven approach, an official statement said today.

State Police Chief Shri Vikas Sahay said that the adoption of such technology makes crime investigation faster and more accurate, reinforcing Gujarat Police’s commitment to smarter, professional policing.

Under NAFIS, fingerprints of criminals arrested for various serious crimes are stored in a national database of over 1.20 crore records, while Gujarat contributes data of more than 22 lakh criminals.

Case Example: Accused Apprehended from Mumbai in 48 Hours

A recent case under the Gaekwad Haveli police station in Ahmedabad demonstrates the efficiency of NAFIS. Fingerprints collected from the crime scene were uploaded to the portal, and once matched, a direct alert was sent to State Police Chief Vikas Sahay. He immediately coordinated with the Mumbai Police Commissioner, sharing the details of the accused.

Thanks to swift action and inter-state coordination, the Mumbai Police tracked and apprehended the accused within 48 hours and handed him over to Gujarat Police. Vikas Sahay congratulated the Mumbai Police team for their prompt response and presented them with a certificate of appreciation. DeshGujarat
