Dahegam/Gandhinagar: Violent Muslims carried out stone pelting at a Navratri Garba event venue in Bahiyal near Dahegam in Gandhinagar district. Over eight–ten vehicles were wrecked, while three shops were vandalized and torched. In response, Hindu youths also pelted stones. Police lobbed 5 tear gas shells to control the mob on rampage and rounded up around 50 persons as per the primary reports. As per a local resident, the temples and idols of Amba Maa, Lord Ram, and Mahadev were also broken and vandalised.

The Muslims got agitated reportedly after a social media post of a Hindu boy opining that there should be ‘I Love Mahadev’ trending instead of ‘I Love Muhammad’. This reportedly angered members of the Muslim community, leading a group of men to target the boy’s shop. When he fled, the shop was vandalized. Other shops in the area were also vandalised and set ablaze, including an Aadhaar Card center and an electricity equipment shop.

A local resident told the media that the Muslim community had earlier carried out a rally regarding someone posting “Jai Shri Ram.” “There are not even 80 Hindu families here, while Muslims number in the thousands. They vandalized everything last night, including the temples of Ambe Maa, Ramji, and Mahadev. They vandalized every idol. Goods worth ₹5 lakh were looted from my shop. Around five shops were vandalized while three were set ablaze,” he added.

“They were pelting stones of all sizes and have destroyed many of our shops. With the police taking a little more time to arrive, the losses increased. Even the police van has been vandalized,” another local said.

A local resident said, “A mob of 200–300 came from Ugamna and Morvad areas and vandalized our vehicles. My car was also vandalized with all glass broken. Garba was going on with kids and women playing and elderly sitting, yet they pelted stones, due to which 5–6 people were injured.”

Approximately four local police personnel, including an LCB PI, were injured during the incident. Due to the stone-pelting, the entire village was turned into a police camp for maintaining law and order.
