August 31, 2025
New Delhi, August 31, 2025 – Indian cricket stalwart Cheteshwar Pujara, who announced his retirement from all forms of cricket on August 24, received a touching letter of appreciation from Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday. The letter, shared by Pujara on social media, lauds his remarkable 13-year career and his unwavering contribution to Indian cricket, particularly in the Test format.
Pujara, known for his gritty performances and ability to bat for long hours, retired after playing 103 Test matches, amassing 7,195 runs at an average of 43.60, including 19 centuries and 35 half-centuries. His retirement marked the end of an era for Indian Test cricket, where he was often regarded as the backbone of the batting lineup, especially during challenging overseas tours.
In his letter, PM Modi hailed Pujara as a “reminder of the beauty of the longer format of the game” in an age dominated by shorter formats like T20s. He praised Pujara’s unflappable temperament and his pivotal role in India’s historic 2018-19 Test series win in Australia, where he scored 521 runs and was named Player of the Series. “Standing tall against one of the most potent bowling attacks, you showed what it meant to shoulder responsibility for the team,” Modi wrote.
The Prime Minister also highlighted Pujara’s passion for domestic cricket, noting his long association with Saurashtra and his efforts in putting Rajkot on the cricketing map. He acknowledged the sacrifices made by Pujara’s family—his father, a former cricketer and mentor, and his wife Puja and daughter Aditi—while expressing confidence in Pujara’s future contributions as a commentator and mentor to budding cricketers.
Pujara, visibly moved by the gesture, expressed his gratitude on X, stating, “I was honoured to receive a letter of appreciation on my retirement from our Honourable Prime Minister. The warm sentiments expressed are much appreciated. While I venture into my second innings, I cherish every memory on the field, and all the love and appreciation I have received. Thank you Sir.”
The cricketing fraternity and fans have poured in tributes since Pujara’s retirement announcement, celebrating his resilience and selflessness. As he steps away from the field, Pujara leaves behind a legacy that transcends statistics, inspiring a new generation of players with his dedication and calm demeanor. DeshGujarat
