Major milestone for Surat Metro as downline tunnel completes at Chowk Bazaar
August 19, 2025
Surat: The Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) today announced that it has achieved a breakthrough in the downline tunnel at Chowk Bazaar metro station, marking a key milestone in the Surat Metro Rail Project.
According to GMRC, today’s breakthrough at Chowk Bazaar station marks the completion of the downline tunnel, while the parallel upline tunnel is expected to be completed soon. The underground construction between Surat Railway Station and Kapodra, one of the most challenging stretches due to dense old city structures, heavy traffic, and complex geological conditions, has now seen significant progress.
The Surat Metro Project spans 40.35 km in total, comprising two corridors and 38 stations. Corridor-1 (North-South Axis): Extending from Dream City and Diamond Bourse to Sarathana, this “Diamond Corridor” covers 21.61 km with 20 stations. Corridor-2 (East-West Axis): Stretching from Bhestan to Saroli, this “Textile Corridor” covers 18.74 km with 18 stations.
Both corridors intersect at Majura Gate station, functioning as a junction that allows passengers seamless interchange between the two routes—connecting all four directions of the city to strengthen urban mobility.
Out of the 21.61 km stretch of Corridor-1, about 15.14 km is elevated with 14 stations, while the remaining 6.47 km consists of underground tunnels with six underground metro stations at Chowk Bazaar, Maskati Hospital, Surat Railway Station, Central Warehouse, Labheshwar Chowk, and Kapodra.
The Diamond Corridor will provide safe, modern, and efficient connectivity between the Diamond Bourse—the world’s largest commercial complex for diamond trade—and residential/work hubs across Surat. Thousands of diamond traders, artisans, and professionals will benefit from easier and faster commuting.
The construction of tunnels and underground stations between Chowk Bazaar, Maskati Hospital, and Surat Railway Station is being executed by J. Kumar Infraprojects Ltd., under a contract worth approximately ₹942.16 crore.
Out of the two parallel tunnels, one has been successfully completed today, while work on the second is in its final phase. DeshGujarat
