Gujarat govt approves additional water & power supply for Saurashtra region

Gandhinagar: In a relief to farmers and residents of Saurashtra, the Gujarat Cabinet today approved key decisions amid the prevailing monsoon situation. Government spokesperson and Minister Rishikesh Patel announced that additional Narmada water will be supplied to the region under the SAUNI Yojana, while the agricultural power supply will be extended to 10 hours daily in 11 districts.

Speaking to the media after the Cabinet meeting held in Gandhinagar, Minister Patel stated that due to the delay in rainfall and persistent public appeals, the government has decided to release extra water from the Narmada river through the SAUNI scheme to support farmers and citizens of Saurashtra.

The decision comes after multiple representations from Saurashtra farmers regarding the need for water. Minister Patel added that if similar demands arise from North Gujarat, and depending on water availability, water will also be provided through the Sujalam Sufalam scheme in the coming days.

In another major move, the Cabinet also approved an increase in agricultural power supply from 8 hours to 10 hours daily in 11 districts of Saurashtra.

These districts include Jamnagar, Devbhumi Dwarka, Porbandar, Rajkot, Surendranagar, Morbi, Amreli, Bhavnagar, Botad, Junagadh, and Gir Somnath. DeshGujarat
