Kharif sowing crosses 50% in Gujarat on 43.05 lakh hectares of land: Govt

Gandhinagar: As a result of widespread rainfall during the current monsoon season in Gujarat, Kharif-Monsoon sowing has been completed in 50.32% of the total area as of July 7, 2025, the state government said today.
Among the sown crops, groundnut occupies the largest area, covering 17.59 lakh hectares. Following groundnut, cotton has been sown in 17.10 lakh hectares across the state, while fodder crops cover 3.10 lakh hectares, soybean in 1.58 lakh hectares, vegetables in 1.03 lakh hectares, and maize (corn) in 80 thousand hectares. Other major crops include millet, paddy, tur, moong, castor, guar, and jowar. So far, Kharif sowing has been completed over a total of 43.05 lakh hectares, amounting to 50.32% of the targeted area, according to data from the Agriculture Department.
According to the State Emergency Operation Center (SEOC), Gandhinagar, Kutch has recorded the highest rainfall in the state at 56% of its seasonal average, compared to the statewide average of 46.89%. Rainfall percentages in other regions are as follows: South Gujarat – 51.12%, Saurashtra – 45.92%, East-Central Gujarat – 45.29%, and North Gujarat – 41.62%.
This season, 42 talukas have received an average of 40 inches of rain, 15 talukas up to 80 inches, and 126 talukas have recorded 10 to 20 inches of rainfall. In the last 24 hours, Borsad received approximately 4 inches, Godhra – 3.7 inches, Gandhidham – 2.3 inches, and Devbhumi Dwarka – 2 inches.
Due to the heavy rains, 34 dams in the state are currently on High Alert, 20 dams on Alert, and 19 on Warning. The Sardar Sarovar Dam, considered the lifeline of Gujarat, is currently at 48.21% of its total storage capacity.
So far, 4,278 citizens have been safely evacuated from 10 districts, and 685 people have been rescued by the local administration, NDRF, and SDRF during the monsoon season this year. Most roads and ST bus routes remain operational across the state. DeshGujarat
