IMD issues fishermen warning for squally weather, high waves along Gujarat coast

Ahmedabad: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert for fishermen along the Gujarat coast, warning of squally weather and rough sea conditions until July 4, 2025, due to active monsoon conditions. Both the North and South Gujarat coasts, along with adjoining open sea areas, are expected to experience strong winds and high waves, prompting authorities to advise fishermen against venturing into the sea during this period.

Along the North Gujarat coast, covering areas such as Jakhau, Mandvi, Mundra, New Kandla, Navlakhi, Jamnagar, Salaya, Okha, and Porbandar, squally weather is expected between June 30 and July 3, with wind speeds ranging between 45 to 55 kmph, gusting up to 65 kmph, accompanied by rough sea conditions and waves moving in from a southwesterly direction.

On July 2 and 3, the intensity is expected to reduce slightly, with wind speeds dropping to 40–50 kmph and gusts up to 60 kmph. No warning has been issued for July 4. Fishermen operating in this region have been strongly advised to avoid going to sea during this time.

Similar conditions are expected along the South Gujarat coast, which includes Muldwarka, Veraval, Diu, Jafrabad, Pipavav, Victor, Bhavnagar, Alang, Bharuch, Dahej, Magdalla, and Daman. The IMD has predicted strong southwesterly winds of 45 to 55 kmph, gusting up to 65 kmph, on June 30 and July 1, followed by slightly milder winds of 40 to 50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph, from July 2 to July 4. Fishermen along the South Gujarat coast are also advised to suspend all marine activities until sea conditions stabilize.

In the open sea regions of the Arabian Sea, widespread squally weather is expected across the eastcentral, westcentral, northeast, and northwest areas. From June 30 through July 4, wind speeds are likely to range between 45 and 55 kmph, gusting up to 65 kmph in most parts of these regions.

Adding to the concern, the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has issued high wave warnings for several coastal stretches in Gujarat. As per INCOIS, Devbhumi Dwarka, Gir Somnath, Junagadh North (Shil to Chorwad), Porbandar (Tukda Miyani to Madhavpur) and Junagadh South (Nava Bandar to Saiyad Rajpara) are expected to witness waves that may reach up to 4.5 meters.

INCOIS has advised that small fishing vessels should not operate under these conditions, and all nearshore recreational activities should be suspended. DeshGujarat
