Indian-origin British citizen lone survivor in Ahmedabad Air India plane crash

Ahmedabad: As desperate relatives gathered at Civil Hospital in Asarwa, Ahmedabad, seeking information about loved ones aboard the ill-fated Air India flight, one survivor lay in the general ward — 40-year-old Vishwash Kumar Ramesh.

Vishwash, a British citizen, had been visiting India to see his family and was returning to the UK with his brother, Ajay Kumar Ramesh, when tragedy struck.

Vishwash, who miraculously survived the crash, is being treated for injuries to his chest, eyes, and feet. Recalling the horror, he told the media that when he regained consciousness after the crash, there were bodies all around him. He ran in panic and was helped by bystanders who brought him to an ambulance.

The Gatwick-bound Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, carrying 242 people including crew, took off at 1:39 p.m. on Thursday and crashed within minutes, bursting into flames. According to Air India, among the 230 passengers were 169 Indians, 53 British nationals, seven Portuguese, and one Canadian.

Vishwash has been living in London for 20 years with his wife and child. His brother Ajay, who was seated in a different row on the flight, has not yet been located.

Meanwhile, others at the hospital continued to search anxiously for news about passengers who did not survive the crash. DeshGujarat
