Cyberattack on Rajkot Municipal Corporation Website; Data Breach Suspected
June 04, 2025
Rajkot: In what could be a serious breach of cybersecurity, the GIS (Geographic Information System) website of the Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) was reportedly targeted by a cyberattack. The incident has raised concerns over the possible leak of sensitive data concerning lakhs of civic assets.
According to preliminary information, data related to municipal schools, bridges, offices, hospitals, industries, and public toilets may have been compromised. Following the detection of suspicious activity on the GIS server, senior RMC officials informed BSNL’s cybersecurity team. The GIS system was promptly isolated to prevent further intrusion, and an investigation is currently underway to determine the extent of the breach.
RMC officials have confirmed that suspicious access to the GIS server was detected on the day of Operation Sindoor. As server performance slowed, BSNL’s team was immediately called in, and the server was isolated as a precaution. Since then, the system has remained offline for public access.
Three separate cybersecurity teams, including agencies PWC (Mumbai), MNX (Ahmedabad), and ADSL (Mumbai), are probing the incident. Authorities have yet to confirm whether any data was definitively leaked, though several reports suggest that as much as 400 GB of data might have been compromised. However, no financial ransom demands have been made so far.
The Rajkot Cyber Crime Cell has also launched an investigation to trace the origin of the cyberattack. Authorities have yet to identify the individuals or groups responsible.
