Cleanliness drive launched in Sabarmati River as repair work begins at Vasna Barrage

Ahmedabad: In view of the pre-monsoon maintenance work at Vasna Barrage, the water level in the Sabarmati River is being lowered starting May 10, 2025, following directives from the Executive Engineer, Narmada Water Resources and Kalpasar Department, Government of Gujarat. Keeping this in mind, the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) and Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation Limited (SRFDCL) have jointly launched a mega cleanliness drive in the Sabarmati River.

The campaign began today from the ghat behind Gandhi Ashram, with Ahmedabad Mayor Pratibha Jain flagging off the initiative. Present at the event were AMC Standing Committee Chairman Devangbhai Dani, SRFDCL Chairman I.P. Gautam, Municipal Commissioner Banchhanidhi Pani, city MLAs, corporators, and officials from AMC and SRFDCL.

Over 8,998 individuals from schools, colleges, universities, religious and social organizations, NGOs, and industrial groups participated in the effort. Machinery used included two JCBs, four trucks, six tractors, and two Hitachi machines. The campaign removed 76 tonnes of waste from the river.

Authorities have appealed to more institutions and citizens to join the initiative in the coming days, aiming to clean all 11 km of the Sabarmati riverfront in phases.
