Irrigation water for Kharif crops to be provided a month earlier in Narmada Command area
April 09, 2025
Gandhinagar: Gujarat government has announced a decision affecting 13 lakh farmers cultivating cotton and other Kharif crops. In order to enable farmers of the Narmada Command area to plan in advance and increase the cultivation and production of crops, the Chief Minister has decided to provide irrigation water as per requirement in this area one month earlier this year i.e. from May 15, 2025.
Generally, water is released for the Kharif season in the irrigated area of the Sardar Sarovar Yojana after June 15. If water is provided to farmers for irrigation earlier, they can get more production and become more economically viable.
For this purpose, the government has decided to provide irrigation water in the Narmada Command area this year on 15th May i.e. 30 days earlier as per the requirement instead of 15th June.
Farmers will be able to plan crops like cotton in advance. Not only this, they will also be able to sow crops in advance to increase production. About 13 lakh sons of the soil in the irrigated area of the Sardar Sarovar Yojana will get the direct benefit of irrigation facilities. Due to the early harvest of the crop, they will get a good price in the market and due to more production, the income of the farmers will also increase, said the Government in a note released to media.
