69800 km Narmada canals done , 5900 km works in progress: Govt

Gandhinagar: A total of 5,921.24 km of canals are yet to be constructed under the Sardar Sarovar Narmada Project, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel informed the state assembly on Friday while responding to a question during the Question Hour of the Budget session.

He noted that the 458.32 km-long main canal has been completed, along with key infrastructure such as the Garudeshwar Weir, a high-level bridge at Gora village, pumping stations, small hydropower plants on branch canals, and a solar power plant on the Vadodara branch canal.

As of December 31, 2024, 46.13 km of branch canals, 159.70 km of distributaries, 1,052.26 km of minor canals, and 4,663.14 km of sub-minor canals are yet to be constructed.

The Chief Minister also stated that upon the completion of the Narmada Yojana, approximately 18 lakh hectares of land will benefit from irrigation through this canal network.

Patel assured the House that pending minor canal works would be completed at the earliest, subject to land acquisition and necessary approvals. Since sub-minor canals are constructed in partnership with farmers, their development will proceed in phases after securing consent from cultivators in the command area.

The construction of Small Hydro Power Plant-3 on the Kutch Branch Canal is planned for completion this year. Additionally, the establishment of a 9 MW capacity small hydro power station at Garudeshwar Weir is scheduled for completion during the financial year 2025-26. DeshGujarat
