Rajkot: The Health Department of Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) on Wednesday imposed a fine of ₹10,000 each on Zepto and Swiggy Instamart after both delivery apps were found selling non-vegetarian products in violation of RMC’s order.
The civic body had issued two notifications—one ordering the closure of slaughterhouses and another prohibiting the sale and storage of meat, mutton, and fish on the occasion of Mahashivratri. However, enforcement remained ineffective as evidence emerged that non-vegetarian sales continued through online platforms like Zepto and Swiggy.
Zepto reportedly violated the order by continuing to sell and deliver non-vegetarian items. Congress leader Tushit Paneri exposed this by placing an order for chicken on Zepto, which was delivered within 10 minutes. Following this, a raid was conducted at Zepto’s warehouse in Sheetal Park, where 35 kg of non-veg items were seized and destroyed. The warehouse was fined ₹10,000 under Section 336 of the GPMC Act.
Similarly, another raid was conducted at Swiggy Instamart’s warehouse in the Infinity Building near Ayodhya Chowk on 150 Feet Ring Road. Officials found 60 kg of mutton, fish, and other non-vegetarian items, which were also destroyed, and a ₹10,000 fine was imposed. DeshGujarat
