Construction of rubber barrage-cum-bridge over Sabarmati River begins
November 27, 2024
Ahmedabad: The construction of a 6-lane rubber barrage bridge over the Sabarmati River has begun. The 1 km dual-purpose bridge and rubber barrage will link Acher, near the Torrent Powerhouse on the west bank, and Sadar Bazar on the east bank of the Sabarmati River. The total cost of constructing the bridge is approximately ₹367 crore.
The bridge is expected to alleviate traffic congestion, providing a crucial link between key areas such as Chandkheda, Sabarmati, Motera, Hansol, and the airport. In addition to its transportation benefits, the barrage will serve as a water reservoir, capable of supplying uninterrupted water to the city of Ahmedabad for 12-15 days.
The structure of the barrage, which will be built under the bridge, will be made of rubber. The height of the rubber barrage can be adjusted as needed. During monsoon and flood conditions, the rubber barrages will be lowered completely, allowing excess water from upstream in the Sabarmati River to pass without causing damage to the city. DeshGujarat
